What is a light box and an LED light frame? A simple guide

A light box is an illuminated frame for a printed poster. We explain how it works, how it differs from a light box sign and a screen, and where it delivers the most benefit.

01

A light box in one sentence

A light box, or LED light frame, is a flat frame with built-in LED backlighting that holds a printed poster. Light passes through the graphic from behind, so the image is bright and sharp, even though it is still an ordinary print, not a screen.

You know frames like these from airports, cinemas and restaurant chains. Today they are slim and simple enough to work in a small café, a hair salon or a corner shop too.

02

Different names, a similar idea

You will come across several terms in product listings and search engines. It is worth knowing what they mean before you start comparing prices.

  • Lightbox, light box, LED light frame, illuminated poster frame, backlit poster: a slim frame with an interchangeable poster and backlighting.
  • LED menu board: the same frame used to present a menu or price list.
  • Light box sign: usually a thicker construction, permanently installed, e.g. as a fascia sign on the building. The graphic is changed less often and with more effort.
  • Snap frame (also called a clip frame): a poster frame with opening edges, in its classic version without lighting.
03

How an illuminated LED frame works

A bright, evenly illuminated graphic comes from combining three elements.

In the LEDMESEE single-sided model, the whole construction is 12 mm thick, including 3 mm tempered glass. You change the poster without tools: slide the old one out through the slot and the new one in, without unscrewing the casing.

  • LED backlighting that spreads light evenly across the whole surface, with no bright spots or halo at the edges.
  • A print on backlit film, which lets light through and keeps photo colours vivid.
  • A tempered glass front — or acrylic on the horizontal model — that protects the poster.
04

Where light boxes are used

A backlit poster works wherever customers have only a few seconds to notice an offer.

  • Restaurants and cafés: a menu by the entrance, the dish of the day by the till.
  • Shops and boutiques: window campaigns, new arrivals by the fitting rooms.
  • Hotels: offers at reception, information in the lobby and by the lifts.
  • Salons and clinics: service price list, seasonal treatments.
  • Offices, trade shows and events: brand image and clear signage.
05

Why light catches the eye

The eye registers the bright, high-contrast points in its surroundings first. An illuminated graphic stands out against ordinary posters and walls, especially in the evening and in dimmer interiors.

Unlike a screen, a light box needs no content management system or software updates. It shows one polished image in print quality: a product photo, a menu or a campaign slogan.

How to order — step by step

You do not need to know about advertising or printing. You just need to know where the frame will hang and what you want to show on it.

  • Measure the space and choose the artwork format — you will find tips above.
  • Choose a model: single-sided for the wall, double-sided for the window, horizontal above the counter or with a power bank for the table.
  • Prepare your artwork or describe what you want to show — we will help you choose the right backlit print.
  • Order a frame and print at shop.ledmesee.com or send a photo of the space via the contact form.
  • Hang or stand the frame, connect the power and slide in the poster. You change the next graphic in seconds.
